Line art, again

[edit]

I've asked Jerimee (talk · contribs) on their Talk page concerning line art again, this time because a whole range of items were added to Category:Line art despite not having any lines anywhere in the art. I received the usual hand-waving response about how "meanings overlap and evolve". I know that you've also been frustrated, but I think it's time some sort of action is taken, because the line art category is becoming meaningless. --EncycloPetey (talk) 23:10, 3 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

I agree; and encourage you to report the matter at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:55, 5 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Done. --EncycloPetey (talk) 14:02, 13 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

As we step into a new year, we’re happy to invite you to take part in “Your Most Memorable Shot 2025.

Since 2018, photographers from across the Wikimedia community have come together at the beginning of each year to share the photographs that meant the most to them over the past twelve months. Now in its eighth iteration, this tradition continues to be a space for reflection, storytelling, and celebrating meaningful moments through photography.

Whether you are a member of the Commons Photographers User Group or not, you are warmly welcome to participate and invite others too. Every image carries a story, and your perspective helps enrich this collective showcase.

Whenever you’re ready, please select your most cherished photograph from 2025 and share it on the designated page.

The deadline for submissions is 28 February 2026, so we hope you’ll join us before then.

We look forward to discovering the moments that made your year memorable and to continuing this wonderful tradition together.

Lilywhite postcards

[edit]

Hello Pigsonthewing, you create 2022 the Category:Lilywhite postcards. Thanks for that. But 2025 I create Category:Lilywhite Ltd.. I think in your category the most images are postcards from Lilywhite Ltd. But I am a little confused about the name of the town Halifax in some images. Maybe there are two companies or one company with with two locations. - Can you please check this. Thanks. Did you know our project Commons:WikiProject Postcards? Best regards--sk (talk) 10:59, 9 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Halifax is the town in England. Some postcards abbreviate this to "Hx". Brighouse is only four miles from Halifax (both are now in Calderdale), so either they relocated at some point, or decided to use the name of a better-known larger town nearby.
The two categories should be merged, either by redirecting the newer one to the older one; or by making the "Postcards" category a subcategory of the "Ltd" one.
Thank you for the link to the project, which is new to me. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:32, 9 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
P.S. The answer may be here: "The company operated from premises in New Brunswick Street, Halifax ... later in the decade [1930s], it was taken over by the Brighouse firm of A.H.Leach." Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:19, 9 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your answer. And also thanks for your work at the wikidata-object. I have merge both categories. - In Wikidata we try to collect all data (See d:Wikidata:WikiProject Postcards) and we build some SPARQL-queries for the data. --sk (talk) 06:47, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm unclear why you ignored what I said, and have redirected the older category to the new one. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:18, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, if I misunderstand something. I make a redirect from "Category:Lilywhite postcards" to "Category:Lilywhite Ltd" (because there is the Wikidata-Infobox). And then I move all images to "... Ltd". The next step could be the creation of the subcategory "Postcards published by Lilywhite Ltd". - Is the term "Lilywhite postcards" a fix term in English? Something like 'Oilette' for some postcards from c:Category:Raphael Tuck & Sons. I don't want ignore your opinion. --sk (talk) 13:46, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
If they are emerged, the newer category should redirect to the older category, to preserve the history. It can be renamed, and an infobox added, if necessary. :::::: But if you are going to create "Postcards published by Lilywhite Ltd", you should just rename the older category to that name. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:56, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I understand. I will do this next time. In this case of "Lilywhite postcards" I think it is ok, if we let it like it is. In the history is only one edit (your creating edit from 2022). If this is really important for you, then tell me. I will make the work. --sk (talk) 20:38, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Category discussion warning

Wikidata-driven data visualisations has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
