Hello, Simon Burchell!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Autopatrol given

[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. ZooFari 23:22, 17 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks ZooFari. Best regards, Simon Burchell (talk) 09:07, 18 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

File move

[edit]

I just realized that the move of that monument head file was a minor mistake on my part. According to Commons:File renaming#Which files should not be renamed? (3), the conflicting file on the local wiki should be renamed and not the one here. I guess we just learned something together. ;) INeverCry 23:23, 5 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Oops. Obvious when you think about it really. Thanks for the move anyway. Best regards, Simon Burchell (talk) 23:29, 5 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Category discussion warning

Maya artifacts has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Image Permissions Inquiry

[edit]

I am working on behalf of a non-profit museum in Atlanta, Georgia in the U.S. called The CENTER for PUPPETRY ARTS. We are interested in acquiring the license rights to your image at this link:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Simon_Burchell#/media/File:Bilbao_1.jpg . The image will be used in an exhibition on permanent display for their global wing highlighting the history and celebration of the art of puppetry worldwide.

I wanted to confirm if this use comes under the creative commons license or do we need to license the image directly from you.We would also require the largest file size you have available. If you can get back to me via email tara@farrellconlan.com how best to move forward I would appreciate it.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

My very best,

Tara

An update from Wiki Loves Monuments UK

[edit]
Thank you for taking part in Wiki Loves Monuments UK
More than 300 people have contributed a total of 4,000 photos to this year's competition and we wanted to say thank you for helping us get this far. The competition runs until the end of September, and you can upload as many images as you want - so feel free to document some more sites. Or why not go through your old images to see if you have any others that could be submitted?

Since you've already submitted some pictures to the competition, you might be interested in the banner mini-contest; to take part you crop your images to a 7:1 and upload a new version. You can find out more about how to do that here. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the competition and share it with others! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 12:24, 22 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Simon Burchell, thanks for adding so many interesting photos to the contest. However, as explained on the contest page, there is a limit of four entries per photographer. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 07:48, 3 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Oops, missed that. Thanks for letting me know so quickly, otherwise I would have flooded the page with new uploads! All the best, Simon Burchell (talk) 09:40, 3 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Chakok'ot reference for what is today San Jose Petén Guatemala - along the shores of Lake Petén Itza.

[edit]

Hey Simon,

Took your Chakok'ot reference...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_conquest_of_Pet%C3%A9n#/media/File:Lake_Peten_Itza_at_conquest_1697.gif

...over to some Maya Itza friends in San Jose and they don't verify your Chakok'ot reference and instead gave me the Maya phrase for 'Place of Carozo' a type of palm that grows here. Am not surprised at all about this for lots of reasons and we can discuss that privately, if you like. Can you please share where you found this Chakok'ot reference and please feel free to message me chakokot@ladanta.org

Happy Friday and Thanks so Much for your Awesome Contributions! — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 190.148.39.71 (talk) 21:22, 24 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Chakok'ot is given as a name at the location of San José in Grant D. Jones The Conquest of the Last Maya Kingdom on a map on page 17. Note that the name is usually spelled Chakokot in English language publications. Also, Chakokot was not at the current location of San José (which was a reduction settlement established by the Spanish) but rather at the archaeological site lying some 2km to the east of Motul de San José. Antonia Foias makes many references to Chakokot in Motul de San José: Politics, History, and Economy in a Classic Maya Polity, and Matthew Moriarty has also published a couple of articles covering the site, Entre el centro y la periferia en la tierra de los Señores "Ik": Investigaciones recientes en sitios satélites de Motul de San José, Petén, 2005 and Settlement Archaeology at Motul de San José, Petén, Guatemala. Preliminary Results from the 1998-2003 Seasons, 2004.
All the best, Simon Burchell (talk) 21:56, 24 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Groovy - thanks so much for the clarification, Simon. Seeing as how the current location of San Jose is a post-colonial reduction settlement, do you feel it is reasonable to postulate that whatever name Maya Itza name San Jose is being given is conqueror-defined/invented and not of Maya Itza origin? Or do you lean in favor of what the elder Maya Itza in San Jose are calling it, 'Ix Tutz' or 'the place of corozo' as it's authentic Maya name? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 190.148.39.71 (talk) 22:37, 24 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

I am sure the Spanish would not have given it a Maya name; they would, and indeed did, give it a Spanish name (San José). Ixtutz is a fairly common Maya placename type (there is another Ixtutz near Dolores); many Maya place names are named after distinctive local vegetation etc. As to how old that name is, it is impossible to say, without diving headfirst into colonial records to see if it was recorded early on by the Spanish. A point in favour is that the corozo is a native tree, not an introduced tree. Simon Burchell (talk) 08:01, 25 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments UK 2019!

[edit]

Hi

Thank you so much for contributing to the UK section of this year's Wiki Loves Monuments contest, which finished yesterday. We really do appreciate the time and effort you've put in to record the UK's built cultural heritage for future generations.

Your contribution has been been added to our collections here on Wikimedia Commons, and is already available for editors to make use of on Wikipedia and elsewhere. It has also been entered into this year's contest. If you'd like to see your own images, just click on the uploads link at the top right of this page (if you don't see it, click on the Log in option first).

We've received over 10,000 UK entries this year, and it will take a few weeks for our volunteers and professional judges to decide on the final top 10. The winners will be announced by the end of this month, both here on Wikimedia Commons and also on the competition website.

The top 10 UK images will go forward to the international section where they will compete against winners from some 50 other countries. The international winners should be announced here in December.

Don't forget, by the way, that if you're hoping to win a prize in the contest it's essential that you have enabled email in your Wikimedia preferences. If you haven't, you're not eligible to win. If you're unsure, please check here.

Once again, many thanks for your help! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:58, 2 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Tineo

[edit]

Saluti. Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

A mystery building to identify somewhere around Haslemere

[edit]
What could this be?

Afternoon Simon - hope you might be able to help! I'm going through a folder of miscellaneous photos from June 2015 which I had overlooked and which now need to be uploaded. Unfortunately I hadn't named them and the clock on the camera was not right, and I'm having trouble identifying one particular building. Based on photos around it, I think it has to be either in Fernhurst (less likely) or somewhere in the area between Camelsdale, Shottermill, Hammer and Haslemere. Let me know if you have any ideas, and I will name the photo appropriately. Many thanks! All best wishes, Hassocks5489 (talk) 14:16, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi Hassocks, that is Grayswood Village Hall, about a mile or so northeast of Haslemere town centre. All the best, Simon Burchell (talk) 14:21, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks! I must have been to Grayswood before Haslemere on that day. I'll get that image renamed and recategorised accordingly. Cheers, Hassocks5489 (talk) 14:28, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Fountain

[edit]

Hi. There might be some mixup. The sign at [1] is labelled "puente", but [2] shows a fountain. I wasn't quite sure how to sort it out. Enhancing999 (talk) 14:48, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi - I vaguely remember this. It was a fountain, but the sign had either been mis-spelt or misplaced. As I recall, there was no bridge there... however it was quite a long time ago! Simon Burchell (talk) 14:59, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

[edit]
2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,

Dear Sir or Madam, I have come across a very popular YouTube channel that is illegally using masses of copyrighted images and videos, which apparently also affects you (in this case CC images without attribution are used). It concerns this channel (https://www.youtube.com/@clevercamel), this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2RLWOJICWU) and this image (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:16th_century_Spanish_expansion_in_the_Caribbean.png), of which you appear to be the copyright holder.

If you need further information, please let me know. I have only analyzed three videos so far. However, it looks as if all the material used on the channel has been used in breach of copyright. It is therefore best to also evaluate the other videos in order to find any further copyright infringements.

I am a photographer myself, but I have rarely experienced such blatant disregard for copyright, which is why I recommend that you take legal action here, especially as the channel operator monetizes his channel and also earns money with third-party works.

Yours sincerely Paul Rosnig Paul Rosnig (talk) 23:46, 23 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
